About Roland Szabó

Hi, I’m Roland and I help people and companies get started with machine learning.

My approach is to acknowledge that machine learning is just one tool out of many and it’s not always the right one.

My first contact with machine learning was in high school, when I learned about genetic algorithms. During university I continued my interest in this field, learning as much as I could.

After university I was hired by Google, where I worked for three years. It was a very good learning experience, having worked on some of the largest applications in the world: GMail, Google Drive and Google Calendar. I have the hoodie to prove that I was there when GMail joined the “tres commas” club.

At Google I worked on several machine learning projects, from automated incident detection for applications to making Calendar smarter, by automating room bookings. I also taught machine learning courses for software engineers who wanted to start using ML.

In 2018, I came back to Romania and I joined a startup where we explored different machine learning ideas. I lead a team that built a smart camera surveillance system to detect intruders in real time.

In 2021, I decided to hang up my own shingle and start offering machine learning consulting and training services.

I’ve seen it happen too many times that machine learning was a hammer and everything looked like a nail. I want to help people decide when ML is worth pursuing for a given problem, so that they can get a good return for their investment.
